And this next sequence is in black and white because on that particular day, George was photographing all day long and he was thinking black and white. He was thinking in light and dark and shadow and light. And so his memory of the sequence is in black and white.
This was the very first scene we shot. And it is about a hundred feet from the snow car crash. We shot this in the morning just really in the boundaries of Los Angeles. This great rock formation. It was the one and only time the entire process that I was nervous because I had never shouted the word “cut” before. It was important for me to take control and look like I knew what I was doing. This was my first film and my very first day and the very first shot.
It was very important for us to create, or for me to show paradise before we had paradise lost so that we could grieve with George and so that we could understand how important his relationship was with Jim and how much it meant to him.
